Exeter Chiefs opportunity for Finley Hammond
Cherries keep up their title pursuit
Local rugby, like most outdoor sport, was given a weekend battering by Storm Darragh but Paignton Rugby Club was a rare survivor of the conditions.
Travelling to Plymstock Oaks for a top-of-the-table clash in the Counties 1 Tribute Western West Division, the Cherries produced an outstanding display to emerge from the wind with a superb 17-36 victory.
The tries for Paignton came from Harry Law, Harry Ward, Henry Hoare (2), Tom Osborn and Franco Van Rooyen. Brad McKee added the extras with his boot. The Cherries round off for the Christmas break with trips to Redruth 2nds and Bude over the next two weekends.
Lewis Swarr and Sam Bostock crossed the line for Paignton 2nds in a 5-14 triumph at New Cross in a friendly fixture.
Congratulations to Paignton RFC youngster Finley Hammond, who has been a star of the U15 squad for the Cherries and has now qualified to play for the Exeter Chiefs Academy following a recent player development session.
Brixham’s home tie with Royal Wootton Bassett was postponed on Saturday morning with the visiting team unable to travel due to multiple road closures in their area. The Fishermen have a tough trip to title rivals Barnstaple this weekend.
Despite the wind winning that battle, there was a magical family moment at Astley Park, with Phillip Davies, the oldest player from Brixham Rugby Club, sporting the club’s 150-year heritage shirt alongside his great-great nephew Ronnie, Brixham’s youngest player at just seven years-old.
It was a game on for Torquay Extras at Salcombe and the Bay club battled bravely before going down to a 37-17 defeat. Next on the menu for the Extras is a Torbay derby at home to Paignton 2nds on Saturday. Torquay Athletic travel to bottom club South Molton.
