Three goals in two games for Will Jenkins Davies

Without question, it has been the best week of the Paul Wotton / Bryn Consortium era at Torquay United, following up the thrilling midweek win over Weston with a powerful 4-1 victory at Enfield on Saturday.

It has also been the best week for young midfielder Will Jenkins Davies, in his second loan spell at Plainmoor from Plymouth Argyle, as he added to the goal against Weston with a brace at Enfield.

Eight goals in two games has been a fabulous return for United and particularly satisfying on the weekend, as the Gulls recovered from conceding an early penalty to overpower their lowly hosts.

“It is a tough place to come, we knew they were struggling a bit in the league and they would throw everything at us because they had nothing to lose,” said Jenkins Davies.

“We didn’t deal with it great at the start, going a goal down to the penalty, but the reaction of the boys was brilliant. Everyone worked their socks off and very pleased to come away with three points.

“We stayed very calm and the gaffer said before the game that they would come at us, press us, try to stop us playing and maybe make it a more ugly game. We dealt with that really well. It was unfortunate to concede the early goal but we still came out winners.”

For Jenkins Davies, his opening goal of the campaign was an assured low finish in the Weston game, followed by a controlled half-volley for his first at Enfield and then a tremendous steered strike into the bottom corner.

The attacking fluency has come on the back of a run that yielded four clean sheets in five games, demonstrating that hard work on the training ground is bearing fruit.

“I wanted to hit the ground running a bit more than I did,” he added. “It took me a while to get going but the team we’ve got here is so talented, and we really feel, as a group, that we can push on to good things this season.

“We knew from the first ten games that I’ve played here that we still had another gear. In training, the standard is unbelievable and we then come into games, and sometimes teams stop us from playing.

“We felt like we had a lot more to show and we’re starting to do that now.

“It’s a really enjoyable set-up but we know we need to stop going behind in games, especially away from home. At the other end, our forward players are really clicking into gear and that's been great to see.”

While the energy is bouncing inside the dressing room, that is shared in spades on the terraces, with the Yellow Army again out in force at Enfield.

“The fans were amazing, easily the best in the league, and we do appreciate them so much,” added Will. “Their support doesn’t go unnoticed and we just hope they keep us pushing to that goal of promotion at the end of the season.”
