All smiles for Brixham fans
Brilliant run of form for Brixham AFC
A brilliant run of seven straight victories has lifted Brixham AFC up to second in the Jewson Western League, just two points behind leaders Clevedon Town.
The Fishermen have been on the road over the past week, and trawled home from Wellington and Shepton Mallet with maximum points, six goals scored and zero conceded.
The midweek trip to Wellington was particularly satisfying, as they trounced the only side to have inflicted defeat on them this season with a 4-0 scoreline.
James Moxon broke the deadlock with a scruffy opener on ten minutes and Brixham were in control when Charlie Johansen scored a terrific second. Wellington were then blown away by goals either side of half-time from Jaden Maslen and Moxon.
Next on the menu was a tricky weekend trip to Shepton Mallet, and the Fishermen again landed in style, bursting into a swift two-goal lead through defender Sean Adderley and the in-form Moxon before a resolute defensive display confirmed all three points.
Buckland Athletic have slipped off the pace a tad after being held to a 1-1 draw at Street. The Bucks grabbed the lead when a long throw from Sam Morcom found Ryan Bush, who swivelled nicely to score at the near post, but Street quickly replied to earn a point.
After a midweek home tie with Barnstaple, Buckland have a difficult trip to Brislington on the weekend, while Brixham will expect to continue their winning streak at home to Nailsea & Twickenham.
Stoke Gabriel & Torbay Police and Newton Abbot Spurs are two of the form teams in the South West Peninsula League East division.
Stoke extended their unbeaten run to five games with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Torrington on the weekend, while Newton Spurs are up to fourth in the table after a 6-2 trouncing of bottom club Axminster Town.
Torrington arrived at Broadley Lane on a horrible run of defeats, and that sequence never looked like changing, as Stoke controlled the game, deservedly taking the lead with a fabulous team move, finished off by 16 year-old Fin Herbert following a lovely assist from Ben Aldous.
The Bees doubled their lead on the half-hour, Herbert curling a fine finish into the top corner, and the second period brought more dominance for Stoke. Aldous and Saul Vanes both came close to adding further goals, but the gloss was eventually provided by right-back Callum Childress, again completing an excellent team move.
Spurs were equally dominant at lowly Axminster, rattling in six goals with braces for Tate Breslan-Aggrey and Owen Green, plus further strikes from Stuart Morgan and Brad Crocombe.
Attention turns to the Peninsula Cup this weekend and Stoke face a brutal trip to Wendron in the furthest corner of Cornwall, and when they arrive, it will be to take on a side riding high at the top of the Peninsula West division. Spurs, meanwhile, have a home tie against Millbrook, who are fourth from bottom in the West.
