Peter Slee with a 1lb 1oz Grey Gurnard
Latest from the South Devon angling scene
The Torbay Festival is well underway as I write this with plenty of good fish caught in all categories. Next week, I hope to bring you plenty of pictures and full results.
Dan Hale from Teignmouth has been fishing hard, sometimes both night and day, unfortunately not finding the winning fish but having plenty of sport. One of his notable fish is a Scad weighing 1lb 2oz, a good fish but not good enough for a prize.
Scad seem to be one of the target fish with a specimen of 1lb 12 oz having been weighed in by Henry Nathan. Shay Upham is another angler who puts in plenty of hours and his efforts have been rewarded with a Bull Huss of 11lbs 12oz from the shore.
With the festival taking place, pleasure angling has taken a bit of a back seat, although I took a trip to Chesil Beach and after eight hours, only managed a few Mackerel, two Tub Gurnard and a tiny Whiting.
Charter boat Orca out of Beer has produced another good gurnard this week in the form of a Grey gurnard weighing 1lb 10z.
Teignmouth SAC are holding an open 24 hour species hunt from 3pm on Saturday, October 5 with a 310 entry fee, if you fancy having a go at this, please contact Joe Drew on 07817 791534.
The Angling Trust Wyvern Division small boat championships are taking place this coming weekend at Salcombe. Entries are taken from 8am in the Boat Park with entry £12 per day or £20 for both days. There are some fantastic prizes to be won with a value of over £2000.
The Flounder competition season is nearly upon us and I will do my best to keep you updated on dates and times.
Newbarn Angling centre is still producing a good number of fish into the low 20s and, although I don’t have the names of the captors, have seen some cracking pictures. I do know, however, that a young lad who goes by the name of Eli is lucky enough to have his mother take him and he has landed fish up to 18lbs.
The latest two open matches at Spring Ponds saw victory for Jason Fay with a bag weight of 59lbs 2oz with Phil woodhouse in second with 44lbs and Damien Brading in third. Casters, worms and pellets fished at various distances on the pole were the successful tactics.
The previous match was won by Chris Packer with 49lb 2oz with Jason Fay second with 45lbs 14oz and Damien Brading third with 32lbs 2oz. Pellet was the successful bait here, fished either on a pole or a pellet feeder.
Please keep your entries coming for our fish of the month competition, especially with fish caught in the Torbay Festival. You could win a prize from one of our kind sponsors, Sidewinder Lures or Newbarn Angling Centre. Email details to johnsherlockfish@gmail.com
