Steve Waters flying the Team GB flag in Switzerland
Amazing scenery for an amazing athletic performance
Flying the Team GB flag in Switzerland, long distance specialist Steve Waters lined up alongside the world's top age group duathletes at the iconic World Triathlon Powerman Long Distance Duathlon Championships Zofingen.
Comprising a 10k run, 150k bike and 30k run, the race comes with a fearsome reputation as being the toughest duathlon in the world but it also offers spectacular alpine scenery. Putting in a fantastic performance from gun to tape, Steve crossed the blue carpet finish in an amazing time of 7.48.54 and was also 2nd British finisher overall.
Julian Smith headed along the south coast for the Bournemouth International Triathlon, lining up against a strong field attempting to qualify for the GB age group team at next year's European Championships. Despite the wet conditions, Julian's day got off to an ideal start in the calm Bournemouth waters before transitioning onto the bike and blasting his way to the edge of the New Forest and then a final run along the beach promenade. Julian crossed the finish line in fantastic time of 2.18.46.
Lewis Cholerton travelled to Rutland Water for the Vitruvian Triathlon, which doubled up as the British Triathlon Middle Distance Championships. Starting with a 1.2 mile swim in the sheltered bay of Whitewell creek, Lewis then headed out onto the 56 mile bike course around Rutland Water that passed through beautiful countryside, villages and woodland areas. The final half marathon run then took in the perimeter track of Rutland Water before leading back to the finish line in Whitewell. Lewis completed the race in a superb time of 5.03.26.
Torbay Tri Club were well represented at the Cotswolds End of Season Events, with Simon Graham taking top age group honours. In the triathlon race it was the team's youngest member, Gary Burman, who was first home and took a top ten finish overall in 2.17.36, followed by Simon in 2.33.30 and Frank Reay 2.41.27 who also stepped into the podium as second place for his age group in 2.41.27.
There were also podium celebrations for Tony Hodge (1.51.05) and Graeme Kay (2.01.35) in the aquabike event as the pair both took home 3rd place in their respective age groups having raced their way around the 1.5k swim and 39k bike course.
It's not every day you get to start and finish a race in two different countries but that's exactly what Peter Hayward enjoyed at Ironman 70.3 Belgium this weekend. Beginning the race across the Dutch border, Peter put in a strong swim to lead out his age group before turning his attention to the flat but rather windy 90k bike course. Finishing off with a lovely half marathon run along the promenade, Peter was happy to cross the Belgium finish line in a great time of 5h 32m.
