Out on the water with South Devon anglers

Our Fish of the Month competition was wide open until last weekend when some fantastic fish were entered.

Firstly, a previous winner, Jason Upham of Brixham SAC with a Thin Lipped Mullet of 4lbs 15oz, then along came Jud Lascelles with two specimen fish in one trip. Both fish are new club records for him and they are a Tope of 60lbs and a John Dory to give us this month’s winner.

A prize pack from our kind sponsor Sidewinder Lures will be on its way to him soon. Our other sponsor is Newbarn Angling Centre for any freshwater fish entered.

The Torbay festival has started and some good fish have already been weighed in, so I am sure that next month will produce a fantastic winning entry.

Ashley Cockram of Teignmouth is on the leaderboard of the Festival early with a wreck caught Bass of 10lbs 12oz, as is Shay Upham of Brixham SAC with a black bream of 3lbs 12oz.

These fish were caught aboard the newest charter boat in Torbay, OBE charters out of Brixham and skippered by Mark Criddle. Mark has also recorded his first Blue Fin Tuna of the season, estimated at 160lbs and 200lb to father and son duo of Jason and Shay Upham.

If you fancy a trip with him, please check out his website obe-charters.co.uk for details and availability.

Mullet to 4lbs have been caught from the rivers and some good huss have been weighed in from the shore. With competition running until Sunday, there is plenty of time to catch the winning fish.

Pleasure anglers have been catching Mackerel in better numbers from the shore this week, although they are still not plentiful, I managed a small Tub Gurnard, whilst Scott Harris also had a Red Gurnard to go with his Tub. Chris Wagstaff of Newton Abbot continues to catch plenty of Small Eyed and Blonde Rays on his trips to Chesil Beach.

Kennick Flyfishers have been out after their summer break with their latest trip to Clatworthy Reservoir near Wiveliscombe. Conditions are good with a light wind and cloud, 10 anglers fished weighing in 40 fish. Best fish of the day was a 4lbs Rainbow Trout falling to the rod of the overall winner Chris Bolt of Kingsteignton. Darren Penfold was second with Alec Hoare third.

Fish were caught on floating lines with the top flies being Diawl Bachs, Damsels and dries. The next event is on Wimbleball Reservoir on September 29.

Newton Abbot FA have held round two of the silver fish league on Wheel pond. Luke Hellwell took first spot in a section with a weight of 30lbs 12oz and Dean Bradford first in B section with 42lbs 10oz.
