Fishermen run ends at Willand Rovers
Brixham AFC are out of the FA Cup after a 1-0 defeat at Willand Rovers from the Southern League.
The Fishermen had already beaten a side from the league above in the previous round, 2-0 at Exmouth Town, and they more than matched Willand in front of a lively home crowd.
On an afternoon of limited chances, the game was ultimately decided by one moment of outstanding quality, Fin Rooke sweeping a superb volley into the top corner on 23 minutes.
Brixham settled down after the setback and hit the post with a clever dipping free-kick from Will Hancox but the deficit remained at half-time. After the break, Brixham cranked up their intensity, asking more questions of a determined Willand defence.
Aaron Wellington had a fine curling effort palmed wide by the home custodian and substitute Tom Mortimore also had a low drive well blocked. The Fishermen hurled countless balls into the danger area but Willand stood strong, and even had a last-minute penalty expertly saved by Brixham glovesman Josh Nicol.
In the Jewson Western League, Buckland Athletic continued their excellent start to the campaign with a solid 3-1 victory over Saltash United.
Ryan Richards gave the Bucks a perfect start, lashing home the opener on seven minutes, and the lethal Jared Lewington then doubled the lead with a close-range header. James Rowe added the third with a screamer from distance on a comfortable afternoon for Buckland, despite the Ashes grabbing a second-half consolation.
