Matt Carson signs for the Gulls
Matt Carson is the latest new recruit to sign on the dotted line for Torquay United, as the Gulls continue to build a squad ahead of the return to pre-season training on June 27.
Carson, 20, has signed a one-year deal with United and his arrival comes hot on the heels of experienced defender Ed Palmer returning to Plainmoor from Truro City.
Carson learned his trade in the junior ranks of Glentoran in Northern Ireland, earning a move to Southampton, where the talented left-back was a key component in the Saints winning the U18 Premier League South title in 2021.
After appearing for a young Southampton side in their Football League Trophy tie at Forest Green Rovers in August 2022, the young defender went on to sign his first professional contract in March 2023, in addition to receiving several call-ups to Southampton’s B team.
International recognition also came Matt’s way in the form of caps at U16, U18 and U19 level with Northern Ireland, before Matt gained his first taste of National League South football during a loan spell with Braintree last term.
