Glorious Plainmoor victory for Young Gulls

The next generation of talent at Torquay United delivered a superb Plainmoor performance to secure an impressive league and cup double for the U18s.

Welcoming their major rivals over recent seasons, Bridgwater United, in the Gary Else Memorial Cup, the young Gulls quickly adjusted to the different pressures of playing in front of a big crowd, although they did need a strong early save from Will Howard to repel the visitors.

United largely controlled the opening exchanges but Bridgwater were a constant threat on the break. Jacob Wellington had a goalbound shot blocked by the visitors and captain Liam Poole then fizzed a fierce drive inches wide.

The Gulls were asking all the questions and they got a marvellous answer when Jack Kennel opened the scoring with a superb strike, rifling into the top corner for a half-time lead.

Bridgwater started the second period with a bright spell and United had to soak up some pressure before notching a crucial second, as substitute Lucas Robinson curled a lovely finish into the corner after his initial effort had been saved.

Tom Chastey almost added a decisive third but the Gulls would not have to wait too long. Wellington was brought down in the box after a darting run and Kai Swann calmly despatched the penalty to confirm a memorable league and cup double.

“It was a fully deserved victory,” said United U18s manager Kevin Wills. “We had a good turnout and nice to see over 500 people watching the team. Bridgwater are a really good side, they beat us earlier in the season, so it was nice to do the job.

“To win the league is always the priority and to win both league and cup is a fantastic achievement for the boys. It has been a real team effort and the progression they are all looking for is up to the first-team.

“It is obviously a big jump but the boys, when they have trained with the first-team, they’ve been fantastic and a credit to themselves.”

Congratulations to the United youngsters and everyone involved in the club’s youth system.
