May Bank Holiday welcomes heritage boats

The Brixham Heritage Regatta is a special event incorporating the 100th Birthday celebrations for Provident, the Brixham Trawler, together with her sisters Leader and Golden Vanity.

These beautiful boats are converging on Brixham from Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Solent and Cornwall to join the resident, much-loved Pilgrim. They will be joined in the Regatta fleet by luggers, yawls, pilot cutters and classic dinghies with the tall ship Royalist standing-by.

This Regatta is the true start of the Classic sailing season along the South West Coast. Boats of many shapes and sizes of sail come together in Torbay every year for the late May Bank Holiday weekend.

The afternoon of Saturday, May 25, sees activity afloat with day sailing by some trawlers and activities ashore. Resident artists will be on hand to capture the atmosphere, together with sea shanties and knot tying displays.

Brixham Heritage Regatta Committee together with Brixham Yacht Club, invite the crews to the traditional fish pie supper in the evening.

Very few restrictions on participating boats apply: simply be of heritage design, or a classic yacht, a dinghy or working boat over 30 years old.

As well as the Brixham trawlers, entries for 2024 include the lugger Le Grand Lejon from Brittany, Morecambe Bay Prawners, Classic yachts, Pilot cutters, smaller working boats, and Bermudan and junk rigs, as well as some beautiful dinghies. Discounted berthing is available along the Town Heritage Pontoon and the MDL Event Pontoon for the nights of May 25/26.

More details and entry forms are available on www.brixhamheritageregatta.uk Numbers are restricted to just 40 vessels and advice is to enter early to avoid disappointment.

Don’t forget the Heritage Regatta’s bookend to South West Sailing Season: The Brixham Heritage Rally on September 7, 2024.
