Celebrations for Torquay Colts
Torquay Rugby Club youngsters are Devon champions
Congratulations to the Colts of Torquay Rugby Club, who have been crowned winners of the Devon Colts Shield after a thrilling 27-20 victory over South Molton in the final at Newton Abbot.
In a superb advert for the next generation of Devon rugby stars, Matt Butler, Will Kenefick and Ollie Waring scored the tries for Torquay, with Kieron Wells adding the crucial extra points with an impeccable display of kicking.
The good news continued for the Tics with the men’s first team being named the Devon RFU Team of the Month for March.
Torquay won all four games played in March, demolishing Exmouth Quins 59-7, Withycombe 61-8, North Tawon 33-14 and then a very tight 11-10 victory over a strong Devonport Services side.
Brixham RFC suffered a dramatic and heartbreaking 33-41 defeat at home to Exmouth, meaning the East Devon visitors had just done enough to overturn their five-point deficit from the first leg to book their place in the Devon Senior Cup Final against Devonport Services.
The Fishermen had won an entertaining first leg 44-39 at Exmouth and were in a position of relative control at half-time, leading 24-23, but the visitors rallied to pinch a place in the showpiece final with a last-minute converted try.
Brixham trio Harry Rodwell, Josef Webber and Jack Dorothy helped Devon U20s secure a tremendous 36-21 victory over Gloucestershire in a game played under glorious sunshine at Astley Park.
Paignton Rugby Club travelled to a strong Frome side in the Papa Johns Community Cup. A brace of penalties from Brad McKee kept the Cherries in the game at half-time, trailing just 18-6, but Frome stepped on the gas after the break to triumph 47-16. Paignton’s consolation tries came from Harry Davies and Ollie Woodcock, his debut score for the first team.
