A new partnership group has been set up to champion and promote water sports in the Bay.

The Torbay Water Sports Forum is aiming to bring sports clubs who have a passion for one of the biggest parts of the English Riviera's natural environment - its sea - together in one setting and with one united voice.

It is the brainchild of Sport Torbay chairman Jim Parker with the help of Torbay Council and its sports development department.

Jim says: "Lots of people know my passion for the Bay, the Torbay Story and sport in particular. Sport and water sport is a huge part of the overall story and the potential of the 'Blue Economy' and the business and fun it can generate is massive.

"We have dozens of water sports clubs, ranging from sailing to canoeing to paddle boarding and gigging, who do great things for the Bay, hosting national and international events and bringing in competitors and visitors from all over the UK and would. Imagine the power of that if it was all joined up and they all started talking and working even more closely together?"

The Forum, which is attended by council officers and councillors, has already met a couple of times. Standup paddle boarding champion Brendon Prince has presented plans to stage UK and, in the future, world WESUP championships off the Bay and very early stage talks are being held about plans for a local water sports 'hub'.

The next meeting of the Forum is taking place at the Brixham Sailing Club on Monday, April 22 (6pm start).  New faces are welcome.
