Brixham RFC
No stopping the free-scoring Fishermen
The incessant try-scoring at Brixham RFC is showing no sign of slowing down as we head to the conclusion of the Tribute Regional 1 South West season.
Welcoming second from bottom Okehampton to Astley Park, the Fishermen were ruthless in racking up a superb 88-12 victory. Brixham led 45-0 at the break and maintained that form to the end, with Harry Rodwell bagging a hat-trick.
The final weekend of the league season, on April 6, will take Brixham to mid-table St Austell, who would be advised to work on defensive shape ahead of that game.
Attention turns to U21 Rugby and the Reg Brewer Cup on Good Friday. It will be a big challenge for Brixham RFC in their home second leg against Torquay, who are the defending champions from 2023. Torquay have a seven-point lead over the young Fishermen, the game kicks-off at 2.30pm at Astley Park.
Paignton Ladies cruised to a 41-15 victory over Teignmouth on Sunday, with tries from Tabby Maddox, Ella Fielding (2), Charlotte Massey (2), Jo Banks and Kate Barlow. Massey added the extras. A depleted Paignton Colts went down to a 22-5 loss at Newton Abbot, Ilya Johnson scoring the only try for the young Cherries.
On the men’s side of the club, tries from Dewald Stopp, Jack Carlisle, Jordan Hodge and Henry Hoare, plus extras from Brad McKee, gave Paignton a powerful 24-5 half-time lead against Pirates Amateurs.
There was no respite after the break for the visitors, McKee, Carlisle and Harry Davies completing the final score of 43-24. Paignton are second in the Western West Division, just five points behind leaders Tiverton and with a game in hand.
That spare game is at lowly Bude on Saturday before Paignton complete a memorable campaign with a visit from Plymstock Albion Oaks on April 6.
