Aaron Downes reflects on the Weymouth draw
The weekend draw at Weymouth felt like two points dropped for Torquay United interim boss Aaron Downes.
Played in front of a superb away following after Weymouth’s kind gesture to donate some of the gate receipts back to the Torquay United Supporters Trust, the Gulls produced some decent football and certainly created enough chances to win the game.
In the end, they had to settle for a 1-1 draw on the Dorset coast. Arkell Jude-Boyd opened the scoring on 28 minutes, finishing off a pinpoint cross from Jack Stobbs but the Terras levelled before half-time and then battled their way to a draw.
“It was a fantastic atmosphere and we’re really gutted not to take three points because we deserved it,” said Downes. “Once again, the support was truly humbling and I can’t thank them enough.
“It was really good from Stobbsy to get down the touchline and doing what he does. I said during the week that he’s a fantastic crosser of the ball and Arkell arrived at pace to get his goal, which was reward for him because he made a lung-busting run.
“There were some really good moves throughout the game from us and that’s not me saying I’m happy with the point, because we’re not. The boys worked ever so hard and deserved to win the game.
“We had some really good opportunities, we were the better team on the day, we knew Weymouth would never give up and we had to show a little more composure.”
