Coming together for Torquay United

Support for Torquay United has been flooding in from across the globe, from fans of the club, other members of the football family and individuals / organisations who understand the importance of a thriving football club in our community.

Torquay Museum posted this message, which sums up the warmth of feeling after the club announced its worrying administration news: “Today, our thoughts are with the staff and players at Torquay United AFC, another of the Torbay's great institutions who have survived since 1899! We know too well how difficult financial uncertainty is and we wish the club well with their search for investment.

“In 2015, we created an exhibition with Torquay United. 'Glorious Gulls' celebrated the amazing highs and lows of supporting our local team. Come on United! Yellow Army!!! #TorquayUnited.”

The Gulls visit Weymouth in the National League South on Saturday and a wonderful display of football solidarity, the Terras have pledged to donate £5 from every adult away ticket sold to Torquay United Supporters Trust.

A packed Plainmoor for the visit of Aveley on Saturday saw fans from Plymouth Argyle and Exeter City also in attendance, showing their support for the Yellow Army.

United’s interim boss Aaron Downes explained the depth of feeling after the weekend draw with Aveley: “The support shown to this football club over the last 48 hours has been phenomenal. They have shown their support by coming in numbers and we’ve had tickets bought from all over the world, knowing they can’t be here.

“We’ve had fans from other clubs supporting us, donations flooding in, and it is so humbling and heartening to know this football club is held so highly around the country and the world.”

The response from the Torbay community and football family has been incredible, and more will be needed in the future.
