The combination of Aaron Jarvis and Brad Ash

The performance of Brad Ash and Aaron Jarvis as the renewed strike-force at Plainmoor was the most pleasing aspect on the pitch for Torquay United in the 2-2 draw with Aveley.

It was an emotional day for the club, as fans packed into the famous old ground to show their support for the club after the news that owner Clarke Osborne has filed for administration.

The disturbing Boardroom news was swiftly followed by the departure of manager Gary Johnson but the players quickly regrouped under the guidance of interim boss Aaron Downes, and delivered an excellent first-half display on the weekend.

Jarvis opened the scoring with a towering header from a corner and then it was the turn of his vanguard buddy, with Ash pouncing on a loose ball to thump in the second goal from eight yards.

Although Aveley fought back to earn a point, the combination of Ash and Jarvis will surely be pivotal if United are to pick up wins over the coming weeks.

“Being up front with Jarvs brings the best out of my game and the fans were unbelievable, it spurs us on,” said Ash. “I thought we were unlucky not to get the three points.

“The fanbase make a massive difference and [against Aveley] it was the best I’ve experienced. We want to do well for them, we’ve got big games coming up and we can hopefully show them what we can do.”

Downes was also understandably pleased with the contribution of Ash, who deservedly picked up man of the match for his all-action display.

Downes added: “Brad was fantastic with the energy and enthusiasm he has got. He deserved his goal and his man of the match award because he really put in a shift. I’m glad we’ve got him back in.”
