Torquay United preparing for a unique Plainmoor occasion
Aaron Downes has praised the incredible ‘heartwarming’ response after a turbulent 24 hours in the life of Torquay United Football Club.
Downes, a former Gull as a player and assistant manager to Gary Johnson over the past five seasons, was placed in interim charge of the team following news of the club’s intention to enter administration and Johnson’s subsequent departure as manager.
The immediate challenge for Downes and the players is the visit of Aveley to Plainmoor tomorrow, with the atmosphere certain to be one of togetherness, love and support from the Yellow Army.
“It’s been a tough 24 hours for everyone involved with the football club,” said Downes. “There is uncertainty around but what we do know in these circumstances is that the most important thing is to come together as a team, a club and a community.
“I get the feeling that is already happening and it’s fantastic to see.
“Nobody wants this situation and the uncertainty it brings, but the players are committed to putting on a show tomorrow.
“The amazing response was what we expected for this football club. Torquay United has a proud history and there are a lot of passionate people in our community.
“It is brilliant to see and really heartwarming for everyone. Hopefully, the players and myself can do the job for them tomorrow.
“What we’ve got to focus on is what we can control, and that is a performance tomorrow. In the short-term, my job has been making sure the players’ wellbeing and mindset is in the right place.”
