Torquay United facing a Yellow Card protest

Torquay United welcome Aveley to Plainmoor on Saturday with an uncomfortable backdrop facing them from the terraces.

The Torquay United Supporters’ Trust (TUST), along with other fan groups, are planning a Yellow Card protest to show their discontent with the current position of the club, sitting mid-table in the sixth tier as we head into the final two months of the campaign.

United manager Gary Johnson is obviously aware of the planned protest but his focus, understandably, is on delivering three points to reignite fading play-off aspirations.

“We would rather it wasn’t that way but people have had their opinions for a few weeks now and we can’t stop them, we wouldn’t want to stop them because supporters of a football club should have their opinions,” he said.

“It’s sad that people feel that way but we’ve just got to do our job on the pitch. Fans at the Farnborough game and the people we spoke to were happy with the effort we put in.

“Whether the yellow cards are there or not, we don’t want people to give up on the lads just yet. You will see a lot more confidence and ability from the lads if they are supported. We’ve had these protests for the last few weeks. It doesn’t help but we’ve got to do our job.

“It’s not nice [for me personally]. I’ve been here for a long time now and I feel that responsibility. I want to turn it around and you don’t get success without believing in yourself.”
