Narrow defeat for Brixham in high-flying rugby clash

Brixham RFC just fell short at title challengers Chew Valley in the Regional 1 South West League.

A win for Devonport Services over Barnstaple kept them top of the pile but Chew Valley moved into second after their 32-27 win over a Brixham side that pushed them all the way.

It was a winning weekend at Paignton RFC, as all four teams secured victories. The Ladies performed superbly to beat Exeter Saracens 27-5, the men’s first-team crushed Tiverton 48-19, the Colts triumphed 43-39 at Ivybridge and the 2nds thumped Plympton Victoria 48-0.

Torquay’s game at North Tawton was postponed.

Former England rugby star Brian Moore will be the latest in a line of high-profile guest speakers at the Rotary Club of Preston (Torbay) Sports Personality Charity Dinner in March.

Front row forward Moore, who won 94 England caps and was voted World Player of the Year 1991, follows another popular rugby figure, referee Nigel Owens, at the Rotary dinner.

It will be held this year on Friday, March 22, at Torquay’s Livermead Cliff Hotel in aid of Children & Families In Grief and other local charities.

Supporting Moore will be comedian Big Lou Jones.

Tickets (£50 inc three-course meal) are available from John Turner via jatikt@hotmail.co.uk or 07904 996219.
