Babbacombe v Plymouth 2nds at Walls Hill
Westward Ho! has an exclamation mark in its name. On Saturday, Barton provided many more of their own from an incredible win in the town.
Records were broken as Barton ran up a mammoth 417-5 from their 45 overs with Zimbabwean star Cephas Zhuwao smashing an inconceivable 254 from 129 balls - which included 20 fours and 24 sixes!
Plus, a record third-wicket partnership of 233 with Finley Last (74)!
Zhuwao and Adam Parker (45) then put on 167 for the fourth wicket. All after they were 0-2!
Bideford, Littleham and Westward Ho! posted an impressive 252-4 themselves in reply. But were always up against the impossible in a remarkable game that sees Barton climb to fifth in B Division.
Elsewhere in B Division, Ipplepen finally got off the mark. Neil Hancock, who recently stood down as captain, was back and inspired the win, scoring 87 as Ipplepen successfully chased down Cullompton’s 212 all out, Dom Durman taking 4-29, to win by two wickets.
Week eight is up next. Ipplepen are at home to Plymstock as buoyant Barton visit Bovey Tracey 2nds.
Paignton suffered a fifth straight loss in the Premier Division as big runs were again hard to accrue. Captain Mark Orchard top scored with 39 in their 182 all out with Bradninch and Kentisbeare reaching the target in exactly 30 overs.
After a very promising start, Bovey Tracey’s season has floundered. Scoring enough runs is the issue here, too. Bovey were bowled out for just 92 inside 29 overs, chasing 232 to win.
In week eight, Paignton (eighth) look to stop the rot at North Devon, who beat leaders Cornwood on Saturday for their first win. Cornwood is where Bovey (fifth) visit next.
Torquay are up to second, eight points behind leaders Exeter, in A Division after another impressive win by eight wickets at Plymouth, who went from 141-1 to 187 all out with three wickets each for Chris Kelmere and Josh Nott.
Jono Colegate (81 not out) provided the backbone to Torquay’s level-headed reply with he and Kelmere (38 not out) seeing it through, with four overs to spare.
Abbotskerswell still cannot arrest their terribly disappointing start. Loss number six was by 78 runs at Hatherleigh.
Torquay go to Hatherleigh (third) next, as Abbots take on fourth place Thorverton.
Stoke Gabriel stay second, by one point, in C Division West following their expected straight-forward home win over strugglers Dartington and Totnes. Dan Bullock contributed 103 in Stoke’s 275-6. Jake Robinson took 4-35, as Darts succumbed to 141 all out in reply.
Brixham got back to winning ways, and fourth place, with a pleasing all-round team display to defeat Yelverton by 81 runs at North Boundary Road.
Babbacombe are finding it harder this year following promotion. Plymouth 2nds successfully chased down their required 234, at Walls Hill, for the loss of six wickets, registering Babbacombe’s fifth loss in six games.
Stoke Gabriel are at home to Yelverton in week eight, as Brixham travel to Ivybridge. Babbacombe (eighth) host Ashburton (seventh) and bottom placed Darts go to Plymouth 2nds (ninth).
Teignmouth and Shaldon still have a very healthy lead at the top of C Division East. Their sixth straight win was secured by four wickets over Ottery St Mary at Hazeldown Oval, where they next take on North Devon 2nds.
High-flying Paignton 2nds proved too strong for South Devon at Queen’s Park and are pulling away at the top of D Division West. Brenton Pedley used his recent Premier Division experience, hitting 108 in their 305-6. Wickets were shared around in South Devon’s 127 all out in reply.
Chelston and Kingskerswell came up short by 53 runs at Plymstock 2nds and remain eighth. The two meet each other in a Teignbridge derby at Marsh Road on Saturday.
