Tragic passing of South Devon football hero

The South Devon football community has been deeply rocked by the tragic passing of former Torquay United and Stoke Gabriel goalkeeper Scott Corderoy.

A hugely popular figure across football circles and the whole of Torbay, Scott graduated from the Gulls’ youth system in the early 200s and played for a number of teams in South Devon, enjoying great success in a golden era for Stoke Gabriel.

He returned to Plainmoor in the 2015-16 season, providing goalkeeper cover under manager Kevin Nicholson, as United produced a football miracle to avoid relegation amid huge financial constraints.

Torquay United said in a statement: “A legendary figure at all the clubs he has represented on the pitch, Scott was also a passionate Liverpool supporter who became a hugely popular coach off it, and he was proud to bring his Saltash U11 Girls to Plainmoor earlier this year, to attend our pre-season fixture against Plymouth Argyle.

“As a tribute to Scott, the Club be holding a one-minute applause prior to kick-off ahead of this Saturday’s home match against Hemel Hempstead.

“The thoughts and sincere condolences of everyone at TUFC go out to Scott’s beloved family, and all his friends, at this very sad time.”

Stoke Gabriel & Torbay Police FC echoed the respect and admiration for Scott, the club said: “Scott played a huge role in some of Stoke Gabriel’s most successful sides, winning league silverware along the way.

“Scott was a kind and gentle warrior, and will be sorely missed by all that knew him. Our love and thoughts are with Scott’s family and friends.”

Scott was diagnosed with Mantle Cell Lymphoma and fought his biggest battle with immense courage and dignity. All our love and prayers go to his beautiful wife Jodie, their wonderful children and all Scott’s family and friends.
