Residents, visitors and businesses are being invited to help shape the future of one of Torbay’s most important areas, as work begins on a new management plan for Berry Head National Nature Reserve.

Torbay Council is working with SWISCo to develop an integrated plan that will guide how the site is protected and managed in the years ahead.

Berry Head, which forms part of the South Devon National Landscape and includes a section of the South Hams Special Area of Conservation, is recognised for its ecological, historical and community value.

The headland is home to important wildlife habitats, seabird colonies, Napoleonic forts and unique geological features, as well as being a popular destination for walkers and visitors.

However, the site also faces growing pressures. Increased visitor numbers, climate change, nutrient enrichment and vegetation changes are all presenting challenges for those managing the area.

The new plan aims to address these issues while ensuring Berry Head remains a place where nature, heritage and people can thrive together.

Key priorities include habitat restoration, protecting historic monuments, supporting vulnerable species, conserving geological features and introducing a grazing strategy. Plans will also consider how to better manage visitors to balance public access with conservation.

Councillor Adam Billings, Cabinet Member for Pride in Place and Parking, said: “Berry Head is one of Torbay’s most unique and cherished green spaces. I’m pleased that, together with SWISCo, we are taking the necessary steps to protect its future.

“By coordinating action and setting out clear priorities for the protection, restoration and enhancement of this site we will not only safeguard its special features and designations but also ensure it remains a thriving place for nature, heritage and our communities.”

As part of the process, the public is being asked to share why they visit Berry Head, how they feel it is currently managed, and any ideas for improvement.

The consultation is open until 5pm on May 22. Feedback can be submitted online, and a drop-in session will also take place at the Berry Head Visitor Centre on April 28 between 9.30am and 12.30pm.

Responses will be reviewed and used to help shape the final management plan, which is expected to be published in early summer.
