People across Devon are being urged to take up free NHS flu and Covid-19 vaccinations as cases of flu and other respiratory illnesses increase.

The NHS has announced a series of extra drop-in clinics for people eligible for free winter vaccinations, with appointments available across GP surgeries, pharmacies, vaccination centres and community venues.

Pregnant women, people aged 65 and over, those with long-term health conditions and carers are among those eligible for a free flu jab. Some groups are also being encouraged to take up the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine, which helps protect older adults and newborn babies from serious illness.

Health officials say winter socialising, particularly over the Christmas period, increases the risk of viruses spreading, putting vulnerable people at greater risk.

Dr Alex Degan, Medical Director for Primary Care at NHS Devon, said the vaccines were a simple and effective way to reduce illness.

“Every year, I see how much illness and suffering flu causes, and how much of it is preventable,” he said.
“The vaccines we’re offering are safe, well-established and given to millions of people each year. They’re one of the simplest things you can do to protect yourself and the people you love this winter.”

Children and families encouraged to attend

Parents are also being reminded that free flu vaccinations are available for school-aged children and for two- and three-year-olds.

Children are often described by health professionals as “super-spreaders” of flu, as they can pass the virus on easily to older relatives and others who are more vulnerable.

For children, the vaccine is given as a quick and pain-free nasal spray rather than an injection.

Catch-up clinics are running for children who missed vaccinations during school visits or were unwell at the time. Parents of school-aged children can contact the School Immunisation Service, while parents of younger children are advised to book appointments through their GP surgery or a local pharmacy.

Where to get vaccinated

Walk-in flu and Covid vaccination clinics are running at locations across Devon in December and January, including community hospitals, libraries, shopping centres and vaccination hubs.

People can also check availability at local pharmacies or GP surgeries via the NHS website, where further clinic dates and times are being added regularly.

Health leaders are urging anyone who is eligible not to delay.

“It’s not too late,” Dr Degan said. “Getting vaccinated now can still make a real difference over the winter months.”
