Torbay Christmas lights vandals prompt extra security warning

Extra barriers and security could be brought in for Torbay’s Christmas lights trail after special Christmas trees on the harbourside were damaged by people climbing on them.

CCTV video shared on social media shows two young women clambering up the spiral illuminated metal tree frames in the early hours last Sunday.

One scales the low fence around the tree and climbs about 20 feet to the top, holding on to the decorative star and waving to friends, one of whom films the escapade on a mobile phone.

Another young woman then shins up the tree to join her for the benefit of the friend filming below. She then climbs back down again.

The social media post says the frame of the tree was damaged in the incident and some of its lights have had to be replaced. The incident happened just days after the festive lights were switched on by Torbay’s mayor, an eventwhich brought huge crowds to the harbourside.

The antics of the tree-climbers have been condemned on social media, with almost 400 angry comments beneath the post so far.

In a statement, Torbay Council said: “Please help us to keep the Bay of Lights Illumination Trail magical.

“We’re delighted to bring you the trail for the fourth-year running. The 1.5-mile accessible route features stunning light installations designed to be admired – not climbed, touched or played on.

“Unfortunately, a small number of visitors have already damaged displays by climbing on them. This is dangerous, costly to repair, and spoils the experience for others. It also means we may need to add extra barriers and security, which could affect the trail’s enjoyment.

“Creating this event takes a great deal of time, effort, and resources to make it special for you and our visitors. Please respect the installations and report any damage or vandalism to the police.”

The trail runs between Torre Abbey and the harbour, and features a series of large illuminated features including a spectacular Christmas tree. An ice rink will open in Abbey Park on December 6.

There are food and drink stalls along the trail as well as a food ‘village’ at Torre Abbey, where a stunning light show is projected across the front of the historic building.
