Torbay MP Steve Darling has launched a petition calling for full and transparent public engagement from Torbay Council as it takes on key community assets following the closure of the Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust.

“It is with great sadness that we learned last week the Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust will be ceasing operations,” said Steve. “This is a huge loss especially for the dedicated staff who have worked tirelessly to protect it.”

As the Trust's assets return to council ownership, Steve is urging the council to ensure these spaces are not sold off without public input.

“These sites belong to our community,” he said. “While the council will now take on many of the Trust’s responsibilities, serious questions remain about its capacity to do so and what other services may be affected.”

The petition calls for open consultation on the future management and use of sites such as Occombe Farm, Berry Head, and Cockington Country Park. It also demands clear communication about changes, funding and staffing, opportunities for community groups and volunteers to shape their future, and a commitment to protect public access, nature conservation, and educational value.

“These spaces are not just patches of land. They are the heart of our community, rich in heritage, biodiversity and public value,” Steve added. “Torbay Council must not make decisions behind closed doors. These spaces must remain community-led, accessible and protected for generations to come.”
