After decades down under, outspoken Aussie stand-up Gareth McKean is returning to his Devon roots for a one-night-only comedy show in Newton Abbot this evening.
Born in Brixham, Gareth was adopted at six weeks old and raised in a pub in Plymouth before moving to a caravan in Cornwall. He emigrated to Queensland aged 10 with his new Australian stepfather – a twist that would shape the accent and attitude he’s become known for.
Now 54, Gareth has carved out a reputation as one of Australia’s most unapologetic comedians. Loud, energetic and a born storyteller, his comedy draws on real-life mishaps and memories – from middle management woes and millennial parenting to the quirks of being raised between a West Country bar and an Aussie back yard.
Fans describe him as a master of turning chaos into comedy. After 25+ years working in the corporate world and raising twins with his wife of 30 years, Gareth’s lived-in perspective hits a relatable – if riotous – note across generations.
His upcoming show, titled Glory Daze, will be held at Forde Hall Social Club on Saturday 2 August. It marks his first time performing back on home soil – and promises a night of nostalgia, laughs and stories only he could tell the way he remembers them.
Support on the night comes from fellow Aussie comic Ben Treloar, making it a double bill of Down Under humour with a Devon twist.
Whether you remember him from the playground or just fancy a laugh with your pint, this is one reunion worth showing up for.
Watch the teaser (HERE) as Gareth’s daughter turns up to his gig with a new boyfriend and, well... it goes down exactly how you’d expect.
