Barton Hill Road
Wales & West Utilities has announced further work to upgrade gas pipes around Barton Hill Road in Torquay between July and September 2025. The utilities service says that the works are essential to ensure the safe and reliable supply of gas to homes and businesses for years to come.
The scheme requires that a number of traffic management measures be put in place until 3 September. These include:
Beechfield Avenue junction closed, 25 July–18 August
Two‑way rolling traffic lights on Barton Hill Road, 25 July–3 September
Barton Hill Road/Clennon Lane junction closed, 13 August–3 September
An earlier upgrade took place in the Barton Hill Road area between 20 December 2024 and 5 January 2025.
Abby Smith, project manager for Wales & West Utilities, said: “We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future. We’ll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.
“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across Torquay. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.”
