A business premises in Paignton has been closed by police following concerns about potential exploitation and coercive practices.
The property, located on Torquay Road, is now subject to a closure order issued by Devon and Cornwall Police and granted at Newton Abbot Magistrates’ Court.
Police said the business was believed to pose a risk to vulnerable individuals and was not being used for legitimate purposes.
Inspector Pete Giesens of Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Police became aware that the premises were not being used for legitimate purposes and this closure order is designed to prevent a business operating where there is a risk of exploitation.”
Officers said the activity at the address was affecting nearby residents, who raised concerns about the behaviour of those working there and their visitors.
Under the terms of the order, access to the premises is prohibited. Anyone attempting to enter the property in breach of the order could face a fine, imprisonment, or both.
Inspector Giesens added: “We want to reassure those living and working in the Paignton area that we do listen to concerns and take action where necessary. We would like to thank the community for reporting information to us about a number of issues around the town.”
Police have not disclosed further details about the nature of the alleged activity at the business. The closure order remains in effect until further notice.
