A new monthly film gathering, ‘Through the Moving Image,’ has launched in association with the English Riviera Film Festival and Devon and Cornwall Film.

This October, the event is set to celebrate filmmaking in Torbay and Devon, with screenings of short films produced by local talent. The event offers an opportunity for film enthusiasts to enjoy screenings and network with South West filmmakers.

The event features Rolling Shorts, where attendees can drop in between 2:30 and 5:30 p.m. to watch an hour-long loop of short films and animations, with screenings at 2:30, 3:30, and 4:30 p.m. The films showcase work from established filmmakers and emerging talent from South Devon College, Turning Heads, and Exeter College. Parental guidance is advised for the screenings.

From 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., filmmaker John Tomkins will host a session featuring Lee Morgan, Editor of Devon and Cornwall Film. Morgan will interview the team behind the award-winning Baobab Theatre and Film Company about their latest feature film, Last Orders. The session will also include a screening of their Paignton-filmed short, Made Out of Meat, which is suitable for viewers over 15.

Last Orders is a darkly absurd comedy set against the backdrop of a national catastrophe. It follows two characters navigating a desolate and dangerous landscape, grappling with personal tragedy and the question of whether they can trust each other enough to escape impending doom. Filmed entirely in South Devon, the feature showcases stunning locations across Torbay, South Hams, and Dartmoor.

The evening will also highlight other indie features, including The Medusa Box and Cleanin' Up The Town: Remembering Ghostbusters. John Tomkins will also share updates on the upcoming 10th anniversary of the English Riviera Film Festival.

Tickets for the 6:30 p.m. session can be reserved in advance. A “pay what you feel” system is in place, with suggested donations of £0, £5, £10, or £15, payable either in advance or with cash on the day.
