A Torbay 'choir for the people' is looking for new members.
The Unleashed Theatre Company have been running their free community choir for the last six years.
It has grown and really become really well established. Earlier this year the choir entered the South West and Torbay Music Festival and walked away with the biggest cup of the night.
Music director Martin Harris says: "This choir is really quite like no other choir in the surrounding area, in that it was set up for folk who perhaps had never sung before, had never had a chance to perform and even those who think they can’t sing. With no audition and being a free choir Unleashed Community Choir set it up with the intention of really being a choir for the people.
"The choir is a really joyous and unique group of people. We set it up intentionally for those who perhaps couldn’t afford to join a choir and also for those who have never been given a chance to perform. It’s a proven scientific fact that singing is genuinely good for you as it releases natural endorphins into your system and so is a fantastic natural antidepressant.
"Many of our members have faced massive challenges in their lives and yet I can guarantee that after a session of singing everyone comes out with a smile on their face. Our choir offers lots of opportunities to perform and we sing a whole range of genres from pop, musical theatre, gospel to rock. At the moment we are learning Mr Blue Sky by ELO and Bittersweet Symphony by the Verve, so it's a real mix. If people are thinking of joining a choir, now is a really good time to come and join us, as this term we are intentionally focusing on singing for fun.”
The Unleashed Community Choir starts back for the autumn term on Tuesday September 17 at The Royal Lyceum Theatre on Abbey Road, then every Tuesday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. For more information please visit www.unleashedtheatrecompany.com
