Manager Paul Wotton was fulsome in his praise for his Torquay United players after they had seen off the challenge of an always-threatening AFC Totton side in Tuesday’s 3-1 win at Plainmoor.
The result, care of goals by Dylan Morgan, an own-goal from Jordan Young’s corner and Matt Jay, sees the Gulls third in the National League South table with seven points from three games.
“We’ve given ourselves a start,” said Wotton. “And without getting a little bit over the top, I think that’s one of the best results since we’ve been at the football club.
“I think - no, I know – we would have lost last Saturday (Maidstone A 1-1) last season, and I know we wouldn’t have won tonight. So I’m absolutely thrilled.
“I thought we were outstanding in the first 30 to 35 minutes and scored a good goal. We conceded a poor goal from a corner, but reacted really well, went straight to the other end and scored again.
“We had to change formation in the second half, and we had to get ten yards further up the pitch. But once we had done that, I thought we were great. We also passed the ball very well when we needed to.
“The third goal was very welcome, don’t get me wrong. But you could see our bench tonight – there was only certain changes we could make. I thought all our subs went on and made a difference.”
