As I sit down to write this on Monday morning, I find myself reflecting on what an incredible weekend we’ve just experienced at this year’s English Riviera Airshow. I know I said something similar last year, but it’s worth repeating — this year’s Airshow was one of the best we’ve ever had.

The weekend began with a fantastic Friday evening on Paignton Green. Live music filled the air, and the iconic Spitfire kicked off the flying displays in spectacular fashion, its wings catching the golden sunset as it soared over the Bay.

Then came the Firebirds, dazzling us with a dramatic pyrotechnic performance, before the night concluded with a stunning firework display, generously sponsored by Anderton and Rowland funfair, who also brought exciting new rides to the event. It was wonderful to see Paignton Green alive with energy, full of people enjoying the music, the flying, and everything in between.

The excitement continued over the weekend with two days of extraordinary aerial displays. The RAF Typhoon and the Red Arrows were undoubtedly the stars of the show. Even the Red Arrows reminded us that perfection is a process — with a half-heart formation on Saturday that they corrected beautifully on Sunday.

Events like this require huge effort, resources, and dedication, and we simply couldn’t do it without our partners. The support of the English Riviera BID Company and our many other sponsors and contributors has been invaluable. I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of them for helping to deliver such a beloved and successful event.

These events are more than just great days out — they are vital for our local economy. It’s estimated that every £1 spent on the Airshow generates £15 in return, bringing around £5 million into the Bay. You could see the impact clearly, with local hospitality, food, and catering businesses buzzing all weekend.

A massive thank you also goes to the Torbay Council Events Team and the many dedicated volunteers who gave up their time to ensure the event ran smoothly. From parking coordination to accessible viewing areas, supporting traders, and ensuring public safety — your efforts do not go unnoticed and are deeply appreciated.

Jackie and I were proud to be among the volunteers over the three days. We enjoyed everything from managing seating areas on the seafront and selling programmes, to helping with the wide array of merchandise. I even had the joy (and challenge!) of donning the Mood Bear costume — in partnership with Fostering South West, who were at the show highlighting the essential role of foster carers.

Last year, Torbay joined the new South West regional fostering hub, a collaboration of 14 local authorities working together to recruit and support foster carers. The hub acts as the first point of contact for those interested in fostering, guiding enquiries to the relevant local teams.

You may have seen our recent local campaign encouraging more people to consider fostering. It’s an incredibly valuable role, and becoming a foster carer can have a truly life-changing impact on a child in care.

The partnership between Fostering South West and Mood Bears brings together a shared mission: nurturing young people and supporting their mental health and wellbeing.

Mood Bears’ specially designed toys help children express their emotions, and this collaboration offers foster carers meaningful tools and support to help every child thrive in a loving, stable environment.

Finally, speaking of shared missions, this weekend was a testament to the strength of our community. Council officers, volunteers, traders, entertainers, residents and visitors all came together to show what’s possible when we bring out the best in each other.
