An emergency road closure has been put in place on Ilsham Marine Drive between Kilmorie Apartments and Thatcher Rock Green, following concerns about a potentially unstable slope supporting the highway.

The closure, implemented by SWISCo, Torbay Council’s highways contractor, is expected to remain in place for several weeks.

A small void and surface fractures were discovered in the road surface last weekend, prompting the decision to close the affected section as a precaution. The closure extends from Kilmorie Apartments to the next nearest property around the headland.

More than 100 properties along Ilsham Marine Drive and connecting roads will be affected. Residents will now need to use the upper end of Ilsham Road, near Kents Cavern, to access the area, rather than the alternative route near Meadfoot Beach.

South West Water is currently on site and has begun work to bypass and repair a damaged public sewer pipe.

The lower section of Ilsham Marine Drive has been subject to regular monitoring since 2002, due to ongoing concerns about cliff instability and previous landslides.

Torbay Council has apologised for the disruption, stating that public safety remains the highest priority.
