Torbay Liberal Democrat leader Swithin Long and Torbay MP Steve Darling at Torquay United
Torquay United's sterling efforts on and off the pitch have been given a special mention in the corridors of power.
A consortium of local business people and representatives of the supporter's trust saved United from the oblivion of administration just over a year ago.
The Bryn Consortium has brought the fans flooding back with home gates averaging almost 4,000 a game and United came within a whisker of a play-off final and promotion into the Conference League this season.
Torbay MP Steve Darling has been a regular visitor to United's Plainmoor ground to watch the Gulls in action.
He said: "As the 2024/25 National League South season comes to a close, I want to take a moment to recognise the outstanding efforts of Torquay United Football Club. Their resilience, skill, and determination saw them secure a place in the play-offs, a remarkable achievement that reflects their unwavering commitment to the game.
"While the final result may not have gone our way, the team’s hard work throughout the season has been inspiring, showcasing the dedication and passion that makes football so special to our community.
"A huge commendation also goes to The Bryn Consortium, whose investment and leadership have helped transform the club’s fortunes. Their support ensures a bright and promising future for Torquay United and its loyal supporters, fostering a sense of pride and optimism for what lies ahead.
"Football is more than just a sport—it brings people together, strengthens local identity, and unites communities. The spirit and passion of Torquay United this season have once again demonstrated the vital role football plays in Torbay and beyond.
"Let’s continue to support our team as they build on this momentum, striving for even greater success in the seasons to come."
Mr Darling revealed he had sponsored an Early Day Motion in Parliament that formally recognised the club’s achievements.
It said: "That this House applauds Torquay United Football Club for its outstanding performance during the National League South 2024/25 season, securing a place in the play-offs and demonstrating remarkable resilience and determination; commends their achievements throughout the season, which stand as a testament to their skill, commitment, and passion for the game; further commends the Bryn Consortium, including co-chairmen Mark Bowes-Cavanagh and Michael Westcott, for their exceptional dedication and investment in transforming the club’s fortunes, ensuring a strong and promising future for Torquay United and its devoted supporters; and recognises the vital role of football in fostering local pride, unity, and community engagement in Torbay and beyond, celebrating the impact of sport in bringing people together and inspiring future generations."
