Rowcroft Hospice’s highly anticipated annual fundraising event, The Big Tackle, has reached a significant milestone, with over 1,000 participants already registered to take part.
This year’s event, scheduled for Saturday, 15 March, is set to be the largest in its history, bringing the community together to raise vital funds for Rowcroft Hospice’s end-of-life care services.
"This is going to be our biggest and best Big Tackle yet!" said Alexia Croft, Rowcroft’s Community Engagement Manager. "We have record numbers of people taking part, and we know even more will be joining the squad! The atmosphere will be electric, with a whole community on the move—coming together in an extraordinary display of solidarity to support a cause that means so much. Plus, we’ll celebrate at the finish line with a pint and a pasty! It’s going to be an unforgettable day."
The Big Tackle aims to raise essential funds to support Rowcroft’s specialised care for patients with life-limiting illnesses and their loved ones throughout South Devon.
Participants of all ages will complete an eight-mile walk, starting from Torquay Rugby Club, winding through scenic Torbay, and returning for post-walk festivities. The celebrations will include a complimentary pint, a pasty, and a live screening of the England vs. Wales Six Nations Rugby match.
Ms Croft added: "The Big Tackle isn’t just about putting one foot in front of the other—it’s about tackling tough times together. Every step taken and every pound raised directly impacts local families, providing comfort and specialised support when it’s needed most.
"For some participants, it’s also a deeply personal experience—an opportunity to walk in memory of loved ones who are no longer with us while supporting our vital hospice care services."
Last year’s event raised £90,000 for the hospice—equivalent to funding over 3,300 hours of expert care across South Devon. With continued community support, this year's goal is to surpass previous achievements to further enhance Rowcroft’s ability to provide compassionate end-of-life care.
Supported by WBW Solicitors, Torbay Clearance Services, and Bays Brewery, The Big Tackle welcomes participants aged eight and above. Registrations remain open until 9 March 2025, with tickets priced at £28 for adults and £20 for children. After this date, tickets will be available on the day of the event (15 March) at an increased price of £60 per adult and £30 per child.
