Have story time underground this World Book Day

Kents Cavern is marking the annual event with a week's worth of creative sessions

Have story time underground this World Book Day

Kents Cavern in Torquay is celebrating World Book Day with a range of storytelling events and activities.

The prehistoric cave has organised a week of creative sessions to mark the annual charity event, which celebrates authors, illustrators, books, and the joy of reading worldwide.

Visitors can enjoy eight storytelling sessions daily until Sunday, March 9, featuring books such as Cave Baby and The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson, We're Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen, Stone Girl, Bone Girl by Laurence Anholt, and Stone Age Boy by Satoshi Kitamura.

Families can drop in for as many stories as they’d like throughout the day. To ensure accessibility for children of all ages, there will be a large screen to display the book illustrations clearly.

A free craft station will also be available all day, offering children the chance to unleash their creativity by designing and decorating their own bookmarks. Visitors can also browse a wide selection of free books donated by Kents Cavern staff.

An alphabet trail in a guided cave tour will lead participants to discover the name of a famous author, with a free pencil as a reward to encourage them to write and draw their own stories.

Westcountry residents can enjoy 50 per cent off regular admission as part of Kents Cavern’s locals’ month initiative.

Cornish author Jennifer Davy will be the special guest on March 9 to share her book Chloe & the Bright Idea, a rhythmic and rhyming story inspired by mining caves.

Today,  March 6, Kents Cavern is hosting a special over-18s discovery evening celebrating Agatha Christie.

Matt Newbury from the International Agatha Christie Festival will lead a talk exploring the adventurous side of the bestselling author and how the cave features in her story, The Man in the Brown Suit.

Tickets for this event are £12 and can be purchased online through the Kents Cavern website. For more information about Kents Cavern’s World Book Day events, you can visit their website.
