Murder bid man held after assaults on two people in South Devon

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a serious assault on two people in Newton Abbot.

Police officers were called at 12.50am on Sunday February 23 after a man and woman were assaulted by another man near The White Hart public house in East Street.

The woman in her 40s and the man in his 50s both sustained injuries. They were treated by ambulance before being taken to Torbay Hospital. None of the injuries are described as life-changing or life-threatening.

A male suspect left the scene following the assault. Police inquiries led to a nearby address a short time later where a man in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of two counts of attempted murder. He remains in custody.

Detective Inspector Nicky Baker said: “We would like to reassure the public that this was an isolated incident and we believe the suspect and the victims are known to each other.

“We know that the incident was witnessed by a number of people and we would ask anyone who has not yet spoken with police to please get in touch.

“We would particularly like to speak with anyone who may have captured the incident on their mobile phones, vehicle dashcam, or on CCTV.
