Steve Darling: Sir Ed backs call to give tourism sector tax break

Torbay MP Steve Darling welcomes party leader Sir Ed Davey to seaside for discussions

Steve Darling: Sir Ed backs call to give tourism sector tax break

Parliament is currently in recess until the 24th and I'm making the most of this time by tackling casework, holding my pop-up surgeries, and attending various visits and meetings.

Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of welcoming Sir Ed Davey MP, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, to the Bay.

Since becoming leader in 2020, Ed has led the party to several local election successes, historic by-election wins, and the best General Election result for the Lib Dems in over 100 years, with 72 MPs elected.

Known for his unconventional approach, including stunts like kayaking and bungee jumping, Ed also has a serious side.

He has advocated for carers, taken action on sewage dumping, and recently called on the Prime Minister to be bolder in dealing with tariff threats from President Trump.

During his visit, Ed and I had a working lunch at the Harbour Light Restaurant and then visited Paignton Pier.

There, we played crazy golf, though my guide dog Jennie disrupted the game by trying to fetch the golf balls! The Paignton Pier team welcomed us warmly and we discussed the government's increase to employers' national insurance contributions, which could harm Torbay's tourism industry. I remain steadfast in my calls on the government to rethink these increases.

We've recently had news about a proposed relocation of vital coronary services from Torbay Hospital to Exeter, 24 miles away. Last week, I pressed the Health Secretary with an urgent question, requesting a meeting to discuss this proposal. I made it clear that this move risks patient safety for Torbay residents and urged the Minister to meet with me and fellow South Devon MPs to address our serious concerns.

Unfortunately, my request for a meeting was declined. I am now demanding urgent meetings with local health bosses to ensure that our community's voice is heard. Residents in Torbay deserve accessible, life-saving care — I will not allow these concerns to be ignored.

A fortnight ago, I met with three sixth form politics students from Torquay Girls' Grammar School as they continue their important campaign against misogyny and harassment in the workplace.

It is deeply concerning that young women and girls still face these challenges — especially as many of our local youngsters take on part-time jobs.

We must ensure that they are safe, supported and protected. During our discussion we developed an action plan to tackle these issues, and I am pleased to confirm that we will be hosting a roundtable with local businesses in the near future.

This will be an opportunity to discuss practical steps to create safer and more respectful workplaces for everyone.

I am incredibly proud to see such enthusiasm for politics among young people in the Bay. It is particularly encouraging to witness this passion from TGGS students, especially as two valued members of my own team are alumni of the school. Their continued commitment to serving our community reflects the strong civic spirit that exists in the younger generation. I look forward to working alongside these students and our local businesses to drive real change.

Like many people, I was deeply saddened to hear the news that former Torquay United footballer Tony Bedeau has passed away at the age of just 45. The striker spent over 10 years with the club across two different spells. In his time, he made a total of 374 appearances and scored 65 goals. I would like to send my thoughts and condolences to Tony’s family.
