Barbra Streisand tribute show coming to Torquay

A spectacular tribute to Barbara Streisand is coming to Torquay this spring, writes Ella Woszczyk.

Barbra Streisand: The Greatest Star is being staged for one night only at the Babbacombe Theatre at 7.30pm on Friday, March 14.

With a musical career spanning over six decades, Streisand has achieved impressive success as a household name.

As a 17-year-old, she said: “I have to become famous, just so I can get someone else to make my bed.”

Her dream started to be realised when, in 1960, her performance at a talent contest at a Manhattan gay bar was met with a stunned silence, followed by rapturous applause. Streisand was booked to play shows all around Greenwich, attracting celebrities, record labels, and theatrical impresarios.

In 1968, Funny Girl, a film loosely based on vaudeville star Fanny Brice, catapulted her to fame. However, her co-star, Sydney Chaplin—son of film legend Charlie Chaplin—repeatedly tried to sabotage her performance after she rejected his romantic advances.

The experience contributed to the stage fright that kept Streisand from performing live concerts for 27 years.

Starring Kearra Bethany, as seen on ITV’s Starstruck, The Greatest Star—Barbra Streisand Tribute Show will celebrate this talent and beloved performer.

A spokesperson for the Babbacombe Theatre said: “This wonderful show takes you on a magical musical journey through time as you sit back and relax, enjoying the sounds of this fabulous ‘concert style’ production.

“Backed by a fabulous live band, joined on stage by guest artists for the iconic duets, it’ll bring back all the ‘Mem’ries’. It’s not a show to be missed if you are a fan of the legend that is Barbra Streisand!”

The two-hour show will encourage the audience to sing, dance, and even laugh along to Streisand’s story.

Kearra will perform many of Streisand’s songs, including As If We Never Said Goodbye, No More Tears, Guilty, Don’t Rain On My Parade, and Memory.

Tickets are on sale now and can be booked by calling the box office at 01803 328385 or via their website at www.babbacombe-theatre.com
