Torbay was today taking another storm battering from high winds and lashing rain.

Torbay was today taking another storm battering from high winds and lashing rain.

The Exeter-based Met Office issued double yellow bad weather warnings for the area and the Environment also put out a flood alert.

And there could be more of the same tomorrow.

The yellow warning for wind is in place from 6am today, January 26, until 6am on Tuesday, January 28. The rain alert is in place from now until 6am tomorrow (Monday).

The Met Office has said that the region is likely to see south westerly winds reach up to 70mph. Winds are forecast to ease from Tuesday morning.

The Environment Agency says flooding is possible over the high tide on Sunday afternoon. Strong force 6 south westerly winds and offshore wave heights of 2.5 metres are forecast. Expect tides to be around 630mm higher than predicted due to weather conditions.

People are advised to stay away from risk areas and take care next to the coast.

The Agency says the flood alert area covers exposed east facing coastal locations including Hallsands, Beesands, Torcross, Slapton, Blackpool Sands, Brixham, Broadsands, Goodrington, Paignton, Hollicombe, Torquay, Oddicombe, Teignmouth Promenade and Dawlish.

Flights in and out of Newquay and Exeter airports were also hit with some delayed, cancelled or re-directed.

Travellers were also hit by early-morning reports of a crash on the M5 at the Taunton J25 junction which brought southbound traffic to a standstill.

The Met Office forecast was:

Today:

Heavy rain quickly spreading across the whole region during this morning. Bright spells and heavy, locally thundery showers, following for this afternoon. Becoming very windy with severe gales on coasts. Maximum temperature 10 °C.

Tonight:

Briefly drier to start this evening, but further heavy rain soon arriving. This clearing to frequent showers overnight. Often windy with coastal gales, these becoming severe in the west later. Minimum temperature 4 °C.

Monday:

A very windy and showery day with heavy downpours at times, interspersed with sunnier intervals. Longer periods of rain are possible in places. Severe gales in some coastal areas. Maximum temperature 9 °C.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:

Remaining generally unsettled during this period with showers or longer spells of rain, heavy at times. Probably turning somewhat drier by Thursday. Windy at first with temperatures near average.
