The recent storms have put more pressure on travelling and forced more people to use their cars when they may prefer not to. Essential journeys are, we are told, should be the only reason we use our cars in extreme weather and many of us would prefer to make that choice.
However, the recent lack of reliability on the railways and the cancellation of many services has left some people with no choice. Even some bus services are withdrawn when high winds are a particular danger for them.
In rural areas cars have become an essential for the majority of families whether it be to get to work, visit family or other relatives, or deal with emergencies and this rarely is interrupted by the heavy and windy storms which have affected us more often this year.
Christmas is a busy time for the roads and many of us have planned to be with loved ones at some time over this period and will be undertaking these journeys in the car. Obviously, it is important this vehicle is in proper working order and in the current economic climate it may be difficult to find the money to pay for unexpected work.
One of the most likely replacements needed is tyres and realistically many motorists do not look at these on a regular basis. Any good garage will let you know the condition of your tyres and the approximate length of time they have left to meet the minimum standard when you get your vehicle serviced.
It is therefore concerning that a recent survey revealed that many motorists who have had an MOT on their vehicle and have been advised their tyre or tyres will need replacing in the near future have declined, saying they will do it later. The recent storms have caused much more surface water and good tyres are not only necessary to disperse this water to prevent aquaplaning, but to ensure when they apply their brakes the shorter stopping distance can be met.
I have noticed some cars and delivery vans on the dual carriageways and motorways are not modifying their speed to allow more stopping time and this is likely to cause accidents in these conditions. If in doubt that your car is not performing satisfactorily, or you have not had it checked for some time, please get your local garage to do this for you.
If you are concerned about the potential cost there are several ways to defer payment over a period of time (interest charges may be payable). Many motorists already have manufacturer or dealer service plans which should include regular inspections but if in doubt, ask.
Other sensible things to do are to allow more time for the journey as traffic and accidents are likely to delay you. Drive at a slower speed and pay extra attention to the road ahead and other drivers and try and anticipate their next move.
Check your mirrors and signal your intention to pull out or turn to give other motorists plenty of time to take whatever action is necessary. Hopefully this will mean you arrive at your destination safely and relaxed to enjoy the rest of your day.
