Community Matters: Transforming lives for our elderly neighbours

An update from the community builder for Shiphay

"Community Matters: Transforming lives for our elderly neighbours

Enjoying a day out on the mini bus

Shiphay residents have enjoyed many day trips over the last two years and I am writing this article with optimism and hope that the minibus trips will continue in 2025.

The maintenance and running costs of the three minibuses, currently funded by Torbay Communities, will end this year.  If you have a minibus that could be hired by Torbay Communities, we have volunteer drivers and insurance cover; we would be very appreciative.  My contact details are below.

Minibus trips play a vital role in improving the lives of elderly residents, offering them opportunities for social interaction, mental stimulation, and emotional well-being.  For many seniors, these trips are more than just a change of scenery; they represent a lifeline to the outside world and a means of combating isolation.  As mobility becomes limited, elderly individuals struggle to maintain connections with friends and family, which can lead to feelings of loneliness and depression.  Minibus trips provide a structured, accessible way for seniors to reconnect with their community, enjoy new experiences, and nurture friendships.

The social aspect of these outings cannot be overstated. Monthly trips to local attractions allow seniors to meet new people and engage with peers, remembering those special days out with loved ones, which is especially important for those who have lost their spouse or long term companions.  These interactions promote a sense of belonging and can even reduce the risk of cognitive decline by keeping the mind active and engaged.  The shared experiences of these trips also foster a sense of camaraderie, as members sing old songs, remembering days gone by, or tell jokes whilst en route.

Many charities that provide minibus trips for elderly residents are facing financial challenges due to funding.  With reduced resources, organisations struggle to maintain their services.  The loss of funding for community minibus trips could lead to even greater isolation and worsen the mental health of elderly individuals who already face significant challenges.

To ensure these vital services continue, it is crucial to advocate for more support and funding for charity driven transport initiatives.  Community involvement and donations, however big or small, can also help bridge the gap, providing elderly residents with the opportunity to stay connected, explore new places, and ultimately enhance their quality of life.

Without minibus trips, many elderly people would face even greater barriers to socialising and enjoying life, making efforts to preserve these invaluable programs essential. My contact details are marinazapata@torbaycdt.org.uk mobile 07548704878
