Two new 20mph zones have come into force in Torbay.

The aim is to make the roads safer for pedestrians and cyclists and improve the quality of life for the people who live there.

The residential areas of Queensway in Torquay and Fisher Street in Paignton were identified as places which would benefit from reduced vehicle speeds.

Following consultation on the proposals and community support the zones came into force from December 12.

Torbay Council says lowering the speed limit in residential areas, especially around schools, can help safeguard pedestrians.

Slower vehicle speeds improve visibility, allowing drivers to react swiftly to any unpredictable pedestrian movements.

Lower speeds lead to reduced noise and less exhaust emissions. This improves air quality, benefitting the health of everyone in the area.

Cllr Adam Billings, Cabinet Member for Pride in Place and Parking, said: "We want to see our roads become safer for all users, and residents enjoy a better quality of life.

"Reducing vehicle speeds in residential areas, particularly around schools, is one of the ways we are tackling this.

"I'd like to thank everyone who took part in the consultation over the proposals, and I'm delighted that we have now delivered these two schemes."
