Pier Point's Lorraine Arnold with Santa in happier times

Torquay seafront Pier Point Bar and Restaurant has been forced to close its Santa Grotto after it took a bashing from Storm Darragh
But it has vowed to carry on raising money for Rowcroft Hospice.
A spokesman for Pier Point said: “We regret to announce that we have made the difficult decision to close our beloved Grotto this year.
“Unfortunately, the damage caused by Storm Darragh has been too extensive and after reviewing all options the costs of replacing the marquee and decorations are simply not feasible.”
They added: “The Grotto has always been a magical experience and was a key fundraiser for Rowcroft Hospice this year.
“This decision has not been made lightly. We are deeply grateful to everyone who supported us in preparing for this year, especially Toby's Shed and Bookers for their incredible assistance.”
But it’s not all bad news.
The spokesman said: “We are still committed to supporting Rowcroft Hospice and spreading festive cheer.
“Guests can enjoy dining with us every day except Christmas Day while taking in the Bay of Lights Illumination Trail or stopping by for a meal before or after the pantomime.
“And here’s where the magic continues: by simply adding a portion of our ‘Invisible Chips’ to your order, you can directly contribute to Rowcroft Hospice, as 100 per cent of the proceeds go straight to the charity.”
Pier Point was honoured to receive the Charity Award at this week’s prestigious Chippy Chat Ball, recognising its ongoing efforts to support good causes.
“Thanks to our wonderful customers and the generosity of our community, we’ve already raised an incredible £6.5k in total for Rowcroft from various fundraising initiatives including our invisible chips,” said the spokesman.
Owner Lorraine Arnold added: “This has been such a tough decision for us, but the damage from Storm Darragh left us with no other option.
“We remain committed to supporting Rowcroft Hospice and are overwhelmed by the kindness of our customers. Together, we’ve already raised £3,000 and with your help we can continue to make a difference.”
For those who booked to visit the Grotto, Rowcroft Hospice managed all reservations and will be handling refunds. Please contact them directly to arrange this.
Lorraine said: “We thank you for your continued support and invite you to join us for a meal at Pier Point this festive season. Enjoy our award-winning hospitality, take in the stunning views of the Bay of Lights, and help us support Rowcroft Hospice one Invisible Chip at a time.”
