Torbay Weekly readers speak out

Torbay Weekly reporter hears readers' feedback online and in print

Torbay Weekly readers speak out
You, our readers and the Torbay community, have been sharing your thoughts and feelings about the local stories we reported over the past week.
This is always greatly appreciated, as your opinions are a fundamental part of how we, as a community-focused newspaper, choose to run our publication.
Many of you had lots to say about the news that, for the first time in history, Paignton Pier will be lit up for a winter-long spectacle of festive cheer.
Your comments on our Facebook represented a general feeling that Paignton is often left out of Christmas displays and celebrations, perhaps falling somewhat in the shadow of Torquay’s more widely known and dramatic Bay of Lights, amongst other festive events and details of the long-awaited revamp of its harbour side.
Our editor, Jim Parker, framed it well in his column last week when he said, “There is no point looking back or lamenting the fact that Paignton, just like so many other seaside towns, has lost some of its sparkle. It’s time to look forward.”
This new light display is a step in the right direction towards revitalising Paignton and reasserting its status as a desirable destination for locals and visitors alike.
As aptly noted by Barbara Vond, Brixham also enjoys annual festive illuminations, so it's a welcome announcement that Paignton, as the heart of the Bay, has joined the other two towns in the season of celebration.
Another popular article was the news that Torbay Council is stepping in to support pensioners with their energy bills in light of the Labour government’s recent decision to axe winter fuel payments.
It is estimated that over 31,000 Torbay pensioners will lose their winter allowance, making the council's additional support largely well-received.
However, Facebook comments revealed some disagreement over who deserves credit for the funding—whether it should go to the council’s Conservative leadership, its officers, or the current Labour government for its Council Tax Support scheme aimed at helping those with additional needs.
What we can say for certain is that more than 1,000 households across the Bay will benefit from this support, and that those eligible will be notified by the end of this month.
In response to an article about Devon and Cornwall Police joining the nationwide effort to combat anti-social behaviour, Bill Butcher wrote: “It is a welcome initiative, but should run side by side with a campaign designed to increase the punishments to fit the crimes.”
Pier Point Bar and Restaurant, situated on Torquay’s marina, received a wave of positivity at the news that it had once again been shortlisted as a finalist in the National Fish and Chip Awards.
Coming in second place in 2024 for Fish & Chip Restaurant of the Year, many were quick to praise the businesses’ food and service, with John Dot Doherty saying that owner Lorraine “is clearly among the best in the business." Long may their success continue!
Locals were disheartened to learn of the recent closure of Paignton Angling Club, expressing that they hoped the club’s memorial gardens would remain open as “they are such a peaceful haven to sit in.”
Many were excited to learn that Torquay is welcoming a new regular antiques fair; however, some people were displeased that its venue, Livermead House Hotel, has introduced Pay & Display in its car park.
Carol Faith commented in defence of this decision, saying that “car park space was being used by non-patrons, limiting space for guests staying at the hotel and those attending weddings and parties.”
Amid council discussions, hospitality accolades, and both emerging and disappearing business ventures, one theme has remained constant.
Torbay has undoubtedly been swept up in the holiday spirit, with locals eager to take part in the many Christmas events popping up across the Bay and throughout Devon.
As this is our final issue before December, we anticipate the festive excitement will only grow, and we look forward to your continued insights as we inch closer to the new year.
