A search is underway for a baby flamingo that has escaped from Paignton Zoo.

The news of the four-month-old wading bird’s disappearance was announced yesterday, Sunday November 17, on social media.

The chick has been described as mostly grey with pink feathers, as young flamingos do not turn fully pink until they are between one and two years old.

A post on Paignton Zoo’s Facebook page reads: “One of our curious flamingos has decided that it wanted to explore the local area this afternoon. The keepers would like to reunite it with the rest of their family.”

A spokesperson for the zoo explained that the chick managed to fly out of its enclosure because it is not yet old enough to have its wings trimmed as is standard zoo procedure.

Although there have been no confirmed sightings, reports suggest the flamingo might be heading in the direction of Slapton.

We will update you once we learn more.

The zoo is urging anyone who spots the bird to report it immediately by calling 01803 697500.
