South West Coast Path Association volunteers, partners, and team members on a walk in Torbay, Summer 2024
Volunteers with the charity supporting the South West Coast Path have been awarded The King’s Award for Voluntary Service for 2024, the highest recognition a voluntary group can receive in the UK, equivalent to an MBE.
Established over 50 years ago by volunteers, the organisation continues to rely on their dedication to maintain and protect this world-renowned trail.
The charity predates the South West Coast Path’s designation as a National Trail in 1978 and has since grown to include over 150 active volunteers.
These volunteers play a key role in preserving and enhancing the trail, which attracts 9 million visitors annually.
Local volunteers monitor the path, conducting annual surveys and walking sections to assess conditions.
Area volunteers manage longer stretches, working through a Path Committee to fund and implement improvements. Volunteer Trustees oversee the charity’s operations, which raise around £1 million annually to support the Coast Path.
In addition to ensuring the trail’s preservation, volunteers promote accessibility by leading walks and collaborating with disability groups. Younger volunteers gain valuable experience through internships, supporting the charity’s ongoing work.
The South West Coast Path Association has shared that it is proud to see its volunteers recognised for their unwavering commitment to conserving and connecting people to one of Britain’s most cherished National Trails.
Hilary Dinsdale, Chair (volunteer) of the South West Coast Path Association, said: “The South West Coast Path would not be the national treasure it is today without the input of the hundreds of volunteers both past and present who have dedicated their time to champion, protect, share, and cherish the path. This award celebrates each and every one of us.”
Julian Gray, Charity Director, added: “We’re really proud that our volunteers have been nationally recognised for all the amazing work they do to protect one of the world’s great trails.”
The South West Coast Path Association (Devon) is one of 281 local charities, social enterprises, and voluntary groups to receive the prestigious award this year.
Their work, along with others from across the UK, reminds us of all the ways fantastic volunteers are contributing to their local communities and working to make life better for those around them.
Representatives of the charity will receive the award crystal and certificate from David Fursdon, Lord Lieutenant of Devon.
In addition, two Devon volunteers from the Association will attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace in May and June 2025, along with other recipients of this year’s Award.
