Life through the eyes of four homeless people in Torbay is the subject of an award-winning film being screened in Torquay.
In recognition of National Homeless Day, Unleashed Community Drama, based at the Royal Lyceum on Abbey Road, are presenting a screening of their film ‘3 Steps.
It is based on the lives of four real homeless people who have been through the Unleashed Community Drama’s programme.
This special event will include a specially written drama about the housing crisis and also a performance from the Unleashed Community Choir.
The whole evening will be wrapped up by a question and answer session from a panel made up up people who have been homeless and those who work at the Leonard Stocks Centre in Factory Row including manager Katy Fisher.
Martin Harris, from Unleashed, said: 'We are really aware that there is a lot of hostility and prejudice towards the homeless community in Torquay and I understand that when we see some of the anti-social behaviour around Castle Circus.
"We at Unleashed have been trying to do our bit to engage with that community by volunteering at the hostel helping to run the Breakfast Club on a Tuesday morning as well as engaging with residents from the hostel who have accessed the choir, community drama group and some of our art class sessions. The film we made last year '3 Steps' won an Award of Merit at The American Shorts Film FestivaL and was awarded a commendation in the Humanitarian Awards Section of the Festival. This film is a really significant piece of work as it tells the true story of four real street homeless folk in Torquay and tells, if you like, their origins/backstory which are all tragic. I remember being on the team for the annual homeless count that the Government requires every year and in the training session our leader said something that really stayed with me, ’These are the children that we have failed’. Yes the antisocial behaviour is unacceptable, but the reason why we are holding this evening is to actually put the other side of the argument to engender perhaps more compassion and help our community be a kinder place to live in.'
So You Think You Know About Homelessness? runs at The Royal Lyceum Theatre on Friday October 11 at 7.30 and tickets are £5 either booked through their website, www.unleashedtheatrecompany.com or on the door on the night.
Martin says: Everyone needs compassion and the key aim of this evening is to promote a kinder attitude and understanding to those who have lost everything."
