More traffic delays are expected at one of the Bay’s roadworks ‘hotspots’
Torbay Council has given advance warning of the final phase of works to improve the Windy Corner junction of the Brixham to Paignton road starting in September
The works on the A3022 Brixham Road and A379 Dartmouth Road.are due to start on Monday September 16 and are needed to improve capacity and traffic flows through the junction. They will last until Christmas.
The council says tThe upgrade is required after a planning inspector approved an application for the Inglewood homes development off Brixham Road, between Brixham and Paignton.
This third and final phase at Windy Corner follows an earlier project to prepare the site in October 2023 and has been carefully planned to minimise disruption.
Dartmouth Road and Brixham Road will be open at all times and the works will take place under traffic management. This is expected to cause an increase in normal journey times.
The developer Persimmon has appointed Roadform Ltd to carry out the works.
The project is due to be completed by Christmas 2024. The contractor will try to finish earlier, but this depends on the weather.
The project starts with the removal of the traffic islands at the junction. This means that for the whole of the period there will be temporary traffic lights.
To help speed up traffic and minimise disruption, the Langdon Lane access to the A379 will be closed and a diversion will be in place.
To respond to peak times and optimise traffic flows, the lights will be staffed from 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday.
Temporary lights cause traffic to flow slower than with permanent lights, but the contractor will manage the lights to minimise disruption.
There will be three main phases of works at the junction: - removal of the traffic islands; building a retaining wall to allow the footpath/cycleway to be widened and the junction changed; renewal of the middle islands and completion of signals and islands.
The traffic signals and location of works may change from day to day, but always with the aim of minimising disruption to traffic, says the council.
Footpath closures will be needed, but alternative routes will be available for pedestrians and
Cyclists. In some areas, cyclists may need to dismount due to restricted pavement widths.
