Torquay United manager Paul Wotton refused to take much comfort from a strong second-half display which ultimately fell just short in a 1-0 defeat at Farnborough.
The Gulls forced Boro into some desperate defending in the last half-hour, but Ricky Holmes’ 38th minute penalty, given for a foul by AFC Bournemouth loanee Finn Tonks, settled a tight game.
Wotton, who made two substitutions at half-time and used all five in the end, said: “I thought the first half was very disappointing in doing the fundamentals and basics of the game.
“We were second-best in the first half.
“Was it a penalty? I’m not sure, although I can see why he (referee Harry Wager) gave it, but we had a stonewall one a couple of minutes earlier when Cody Cooke was wrestled to the ground.
“We made a couple of changes in the second half and did more than enough to get something out of the game.
“But that first-half performance has cost us something. It’s our first real disappointment. We’ve had a kick in the teeth, but we will recover.
“There’s always another game, and we’ve got a tough one on Tuesday night.”
United, who beat Enfield Town 2-1 at home in their first match, travel to Twerton Park on Tuesday to meet Westcountry rivals Bath City.
